Portland's Peregrine Falcons

Document Actions

Peregrine falcons, once one of the most endangered species on earth, have been making a phenomenal comeback since 1972 when they were listed under the Federal Endangered Species Act. Audubon Society of Portland has worked since 1994 to develop a program to provide monitoring, research, management and educational outreach for the growing population of peregrines nesting in downtown Portland.

11-20-06 Audubon Comments regarding petition to delist peregrines under the Oregon Endangered Species Act: Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife proposes to remove state endangered species act protections from the American peregrine falcon: Although the American peregrine falcon was delisted from the federal Endangered Species Act in 1999, it has continued to enjoy protections under the State of Oregon Endangered Species Act. Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife had scheduled a delisting hearing for January 12, 2007 but has agreed to postpone a final decision until April in response to comments from Portland Audubon and other regarding the need to develop and fund a state monitoring plan, develop relisting criteria in the event of future population declines and to address potential take for the purposes of falconry. We commend ODFW for this decision and look forward supporting delisting after working with the agency to address these issues over the next three months.
