Junior Audubon Club Free club for children members

junior audubon clubThe Portland Junior Audubon Club offers its young members a chance to enhance their birding knowledge and their understanding of the natural world.  Started in May, 2002, the Junior Audubon Club welcomes children 3rd grade and up.

Each month, members receive one of three types of activities: Home-based, library-based, or field-based.

Home-based activities encourage kids to root around their house for materials to create things like a bird feeder, bird house or plant press.

Field-based excursions are invitations for students to set out with their friends or family on focused explorations of local wild places.

So far, Junior Auduboners have explored Oaks Bottom to study Great Blue Herons and ventured to Chapman Elementary School to view the spectacular Vaux's Swift display.

Finally, Bird Biographies encourage members to conduct in-depth research about certain species.

Education staff also lead Junior Auduboners on two or three outings each year. These include field trips, overnighters, and parties.

This program is free for all members. If you would like to join the new Junior Audubon Club, contact Ian Abraham at 503.292.6855 x127, email him at iabraham@audubonportland.org, or download the application form (pdf file).
